Fungal infections in horses aren't limited to one part of the hoof. While the coronet band is the most commonly discussed site (often appearing as a ridge, hollow, or diagonal "V" shaped line after wet weather softens the periople), fungal infections can also take hold in the frog, sole, and hoof wall itself.

At the coronet band, infections typically start when the periople swells during wet conditions, exposing the area to fungal spores. In the frog, fungal infections often present differently, showing as soft, crumbly, or discoloured tissue, and are often confused with Thrush.
